Learning how to protect your identity online is extremely important especially since this is such a growing problem. People who spend a lot of time need to understand that while we all love to browse the internet and paying our bills online is much more convenient than having to purchase stamps and run to the post office to mail your bills every month.
You should not be afraid to use your computer to take care of financial obligations; however there are some steps that you can take to insure that no one will be using your information for their purposes that can leave you with a bunch of debt.
If you do plan on spending a lot of time on your computer and you plan on using it to take care of financial obligations; then there are some things that you should begin doing to make sure that no one can get a hold of any of your personal information.
1. Strong Passwords: While this makes common sense; you would be amazed at how many people use weak passwords that are easy to figure out. Never use your social security number as your password or other personal information about yourself. One of the best things I have figured out that are easy to remember and easy for no one to figure out is to use numbers and the letters as a part of your password. If possible you should also capitalize part of the letters that you use; this will make it a strong password and difficult for people to try to decipher.
2. Never Store Financial Information On Your Hard Drive: Your computer can be used as a target and if someone broke into your home and stole it; then the last thing you want is a bunch of personal information that can be used against you.
3. Prepaid Visa Cards: No one thinks these things are beneficial especially if you have your own credit cards; however using a prepaid credit card to take care of all your online transactions can be safer than using your credit card or even debit card.
You should not be scared to do any type of online transactions or business; however these are some steps that you should begin taking to protect your identity online
