The one thing that a parent wants is to ensure that their kids are safe. We all say that if someone hurts our kids then we will hurt them; however are you taking the necessary steps to ensure that you are doing everything that you can to protect them? We decided to list some of the best ways to protect your college kids from becoming identity victims.
We all know that when our kids leave home to attend college that they are bombarded with all kinds of offer like credit cards and everything else that we
never had to worry about when they were living at home going to high school. Research shows that the age bracket between 18-29 account for 30% of the Id theft reports.
Here are some steps that you can share with your loved ones to learn how to protect your college student from becoming an identity theft victim:
1. Credit Cards: College students are bombarded with all kinds of offers by credit card companies promising to give them credit cards. They are fresh out of high school and their credit has not been tarnished; tell your college student not to be enticed by those credit card offers. If they want to get a credit card; help them get one. However you will want to explain the importance of keeping their credit nice and clean so that later on in life they will not experience any difficulties.
2. Drivers License: Stress the importance of keeping this information as private as possible; never give anyone this information regardless of who they are.
3. Never co-sign for anyone: We all know that at the age of 19 and older we all want to get a new vehicle. If one of their friends asks them to co-sign for them stress the importance of not doing it.
As a parent you want to make sure that your child understands the importance of keeping their identity as safe as possible. Of course at that age they may not understand nor really give it a lot of thought. So as a parent never give them any important documents such as a birth certificate or a social security card
