Credit identity theft protection is a must have in todays society and you should always be aware of what is going on around them. If you do happen to become a victim of identity theft; then you should know who you should contact in order to begin working on retrieving your identity. We all know that the sooner we face the problem and begin working on cleaning up the issue; the better it is for everyone involved.

If you do not have an attorney then you will want to find a good attorney that deals with cases of identity theft. You may have to look online or in your phone book to find one that will be able to assist you while this can be expensive; you are going to have to ensure that you have one that can help you with your problems and can handle your legal issues. You will never want to tackle this issue alone without an attorney.

The next step is to contact all your creditors and inform them of the situation. They will freeze your accounts so that no one can do any activity under your name and social security.

I would highly recommend that once the credit bureaus have issued a fraud alert on your account; then you should definitely get a copy of your credit report. This will show you whether there has been anything put on your account without your permission. You will not have to pay for a copy of this report; the credit bureaus will send you a free copy.

However if it is a recent situation and you caught it right away; then it may not show up on your credit report. It does not hurt to look; maybe you caught the crime in time before they did too much harm.

You always want to contact the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) and file a report with them. When you do contact them; make sure that you have a copy of the police report that you filed with your local police department.

Remember if you are a victim; you are not the first nor will you be the last. There are millions of people who are having their identities stolen everyday; as a matter of fact every 3 seconds someone’s identity is stolen. The best defense to never have to worry about this situation is to have the best offense; can you honestly say that you have a good one in place?
