Everyone everywhere wants to know how to avoid identity theft. With all the talks about job layoffs left and right you can be sure that this problem will continue to grow to become an epidemic. Our society has such easy access to any type of information especially since everyone has access to the internet.
However this should not worry you; even though someone’s identity gets stolen every 3 seconds in our society; there are some steps that you can take to ensure that you and your family can avoid identity theft.
1. Never give your children their social security card: While this is common sense that you should never give them their own cards; when I was growing up my mother gave me my card right away that I had to hide it in my dresser.
2. Rent a safe deposit box: Put all your valuable papers into a safe deposit box at your local bank. If you do not want to rent a safe deposit box; then you can easily purchase a safe that you can keep at your home. However when you do purchase a safe to keep at home; make sure that it is fire resistant.
3. Always check your mailbox: Sometimes when we get home all we want to do is sit down and then forget the mail. However if you have the type of mailbox that anyone can get into; then you always want to check your mailbox on a daily basis.
4. Check your credit report: This one is huge because most people never take the time to check their credit report at least once a year. How will you know if there is something that is on your credit report if you never check it?
Just remember that in order to avoid identity theft you have to stay on top of what is going on in your life. If you have no idea what is going on; then someone can be using your personal information right now. If you would prefer not to have to worry about watching over your own information then it is best if you get an identity protection plan.
